LA's Central Library exhibits: "To Live and Dine in LA"

If you relish LA's food culture history, then you must go downtown soon. The Central Library downtown recently opened an exhibit called "To Live and Dine in LA." This exhibit features a showcase of vintage LA restaurant menus, photographs, and short films by local chefs. Stop by and take a look at vintage menus, including The Brown Derby, Atomic Cafe, Ships Coffee Shop, The Golden Pagoda, among many others.

More than just a design exhibit, the show also touches on the political, racial, and economical issues surrounding our food culture.

Go to LAist online to see an assortment of menus (and drool over the low prices) and visit the Central Library's website here to learn more about the exhibit.

Sushi Roku Newport Beach named one of OC's best sushi by CBS News LA

They may have a typo on the page (looks like the post template wasn't completely updated, as it shows the name "Venue" at the time this post was drafted), but Sushi Roku is listed first in the best places for sushi in the OC by CBS News LA.

CBS News LA writes:

Sushi Roku Fashion Island might be the newest kid on the OC block, but it sure does know what it’s doing. Executive Sushi Chef Hiroshi Shima delivers at “fusing centuries-old culinary traditions with contemporary accents in a trend-setting environment” which boasts a 129-seat dining room, 16-seat sushi bar, and patio dining making it the perfect spot for lunch, happy hour or dinner. Our picks: the Katana Roll with spicy tuna & shrimp tempura, topped with tuna & yellowtail; and the Makoto Roll prepared with yellowtail & shrimp tempura wrapped with seared tuna and spicy creamy sauce.

Congratulations to our friends at Sushi Roku!

Vespaio soft opens tomorrow in downtown LA

For the past year Shambra Restaurant Conuslting has partnered with Ago Sciandri, to bring to light his newest restaurant Vespaio ("wasp's nest"  in Italian). Tapped early in the process to provide design consulting and equipment purchasing, Sciandri selected SRC for our outstanding service and experience in commercial kitchen design, extending a relationship that also includes Toscanova (Century City and Calabasas), The Juicy Bird, Cafè Roma, and upgrades and service support to Ago and Sortino.

Vespaio showcases some of the best and most extensive equipment and services provided by SRC. The restaurant will boast a three-meal service throughout the day, including bar service and pastries made in-house. Featured equipment includes a GrandFlame Rotisserie oven by Rotisol with stunning brass and emerald green enamel; a full-sized pizza oven by Morello Forni (which had to be lifted by crane!) through our great friends at Rosito Bisani; and beautiful pastry cases from Oscartek. In addition, SRC supplied the equipment and installation for cooking/heating, refrigeration, bar service and refrigeration, prep, dish room, and walk-ins as well as custom steel fabrication.

We are very excited for our friends Ago Sciandri, his son Sandro Sciandri, and all of the Ago team. Thank you for your continued support and we will be by soon for incredible pastas, wood crisped pizza, and rotisserie fired chicken and other sure-to-surprise items from the rotisserie!

Salute e buona fortuna! Ci vediamo presto!

To char or not to char . . . your vegetables

How do you like your vegetables? Raw, blanched, or black and crispy? SRC is very familiar with cooking veggies (ask Mr. Shambra's vegetarian SO about that) and occasionally chars an asparagus or two when called for in his own home cooking.

National Restaurant News thinks this trend is making a comeback as well. Read their article at the link below.
